On August 24, 2013 our daughters Mairead Faith & Amelia Hope were called to Heaven. When we were first married we tried everything that we could to conceive, only to have suffered a loss and multiple doctors informing us that we would not be able to have children of our own. After much research of other options and soul searching, we decided to accept God's plan for us. You can only imagine how thrilled we were two years later to learn that we were expecting. It was truly a miracle! We will never forget the moment we were told that we were having twins. This was a double blessing that brought us so much joy. With all of the excitement we didn't think much of being told that, since they were identical twins, we had a long road ahead of us with this pregnancy. As with any pregnancy we had our share of scares, but with each indicator of bad news our girls defied the odds. With constant screening and plenty of rest, the majority of the risks were finally behind us as we traveled down the road to parenthood. On the morning of August 2nd during our regular screening there was a finding for TTTS, stage one. We were sent for a consultation that afternoon to a team in Providence RI who excel in treating this disease. By the afternoon the babies had advanced rapidly to stage three; the doctors immediately scheduled us for surgery on Friday to try to correct the condition. Sadly, Amelia passed away right before the surgery. The doctors proceeded with the surgery in efforts to save Mairead. After being told Amelia did not survive, we still had hope for Mairead. The surgery was successful in reducing the stage of TTTS and she had a very strong heart beat. We kept the faith that she would continue to fight. Things seemed to have been going well until Saturday evening when Eileen went into pre-term labor. We were rushed to the delivery room where she gave birth to Mairead first and then Amelia. Mairead was still alive but just too young to survive. We held her in our arms and comforted our sweet girl until she passed. We were also able to hold our brave angel Amelia, until we felt it was the right time to let them both go. Each of our daughters weighed a little over a pound. Fully formed, little baby dolls with Eileen's nose and lips and Rob's eyes. We feel so blessed that we were able to experience the joy of being a family, if only so brief. As hard as it was to say goodbye, we are embracing the knowledge that we are parents of two beautiful girls who we will forever hold in our hearts. We do have memories to make us smile. Mairead was our little trouble maker, always dancing around when the technicians needed her to sit still. Amelia was our little kicker, waking Mommy up in the morning and kicking Daddy when he rubbed Mommy's belly. We will cherish these and many more memories for the rest of our lives. Mairead and Amelia were laid to rest on August 28th, 2013 at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Rhode Island. We are comforted to know they are in the Baker family plot, currently with Rob's grandparents, Gigi and Pop. They are surrounded by many other angels in heaven, including Eileen's father, Pop Pop, who we know is enjoying every minute with his granddaughters. We'd like to think that we would have succeeded in raising our daughters with character, charm and integrity. They are a beautiful unfinished promise who will watch over us until we one day meet again. All children are equally dear, but Mairead and Amelia were miracles that will never leave our hearts. So now we will dry our tears as best we can and base our trust in God to take good care of our angels.
